Miranza clinics are a national and international benchmark in the treatment of keratoconus, an eye problem that we can stop or fight effectively at present.

At Miranza centres, we offer diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of keratoconus, with ophthalmologists who specialize in the management of this disease, which is the leading cause of corneal transplantation among young people.

Keratoconus is characterized by a thinning of the cornea as a result of the degeneration of the collagen fibers that make up this ocular tissue. As a result, the corneal curvature increases and the ocular surface becomes cone-shaped, causing a progressive loss of vision.

At Miranza clinics, we have extensive experience in the treatment of severe cases of keratoconus, but also in its early diagnosis, before the patient is even aware of having this disorder.

Benchmark clinics in corneal crosslinking against keratoconus

At Miranza clinics, we feature different treatments for keratoconus. Sometimes, if the disease is stable and does not progress, it is enough to use glasses or contact lenses, which can be specially adapted.

When surgery is required, if we act in time, we can stop the disease and prevent it from reaching very limiting stages for vision. We do this with the corneal crosslinking technique, a keratoconus surgery that, if properly indicated, manages to stop it in over 90% of cases, hardening the cornea so that it does not deform further. The procedure we perform in the operating theaters at Miranza clinics to treat keratoconus does not involve entering the eye. We only need to apply a few drops of vitamin B2 or riboflavin, which, upon contact with ultraviolet radiation, produce a chemical reaction that strengthens the cornea’s collagen fibers. This prevents the progression of keratoconus.

Corneal transplant, only when keratoconus is very advanced

The other most common option we offer at Miranza clinics to treat keratoconus is corneal transplantation. We consider this alternative when the disease is so advanced that crosslinking would no longer be advisable and would not allow the patient to enjoy good quality of vision in their daily lives.

Corneal transplant, also called keratoplasty, is one of the most commonly performed transplants in Spain. Thanks to current minimally invasive techniques, in many cases, it is no longer necessary to replace the entire cornea, but only the most anterior part, which is the part that is usually damaged by keratoconus.

These selective corneal transplant techniques, which the specialists at Miranza clinics perform in a state-of-the-art manner, are highly elaborate and require great precision, as the cornea is a very thin tissue. Their advantage is that they minimize the risk of complications and facilitate the patient’s recovery. However, the ideal is not to have to undergo a transplant, but to be able to detect keratoconus at its early stages, while closely monitoring its evolution and treating it before it worsens.

At Miranza clinics, we provide you with all the information and assistance you need to deal with keratoconus and maintain good vision. Make an appointment, and we will give you the best advice.
