EQ Workplace – a platform to optimise cataract surgery
The EQ Workplace digital platform provides a fully integrated, automated and customised cataract surgery circuit, hence ensuring the effectiveness and safety of the procedure.
Transferring data from the patient’s preoperative tests directly to the surgeon’s microscope and surgical teams, who use these measurements to perform the surgery with swiftness and precision, is one of the latest advances in cataract surgery. Thanks to the technological contribution of systems such as the EQ Workplace, available in the most cutting-edge ophthalmological operating theatres, this surgery further optimises its results with an integrated and specific circuit for each patient.
Connection between consulting room and operating theatre
“The success of cataract surgery starts before entering the operating theatre, as a good preoperative study and an appropriate selection and calculation of the lens to be implanted in the eye is key”, explains Dr Javier Orbegozo, a specialist at Miranza COI, one of the Miranza Group centres incorporating this digital platform.
With EQ Workplace, the biometry parameters (a test performed in the office to measure the dimensions of the eyeball) are linked to those of other diagnostic tests, which facilitates surgical indication, and are automatically transferred to the formulas for calculating the power of intraocular lenses.
Bespoke planning with EQ Workplace
As Dr Orbegozo points out, “this allows us to carry out very careful planning, saving time when performing the surgery and minimising possible human errors, as we have systematised and accessible patient information throughout the process.” He adds that with EQ Workplace “the follow-up we carry out after cataract surgery is also more individualised, as the immediate data dump allows us to compare the preoperative tests with those of their postoperative visits.”
Cataract and refractive surgery
Surgical improvement with EQ Workplace and other innovations (such as the femtosecond laser, which very accurately reproduces the parameters entered into the computer) is linked to an ever-increasing customisation of cataract surgery. However, not only the technology is important, but also the surgeon’s expert judgment.
Currently, there are more than 30 different models of intraocular lenses (monofocal, multifocal or extended depth of focus) that can be offered to the patient who is going to undergo cataract surgery, which means knowing how to choose the ideal one for each case, while taking into account many nuances. “We base ourselves on objective diagnostic data of the eye and its characteristics, as well as on the visual and vital needs of each person, depending on whether they prioritise fine near vision or prefer to see at different distances, whether they drive at night, etc.” All of this is especially relevant given that, at present, cataract surgery not only allows us to treat the opacity of the lens (the eye lens that loses its transparency and is replaced by the intraocular lens), but also involves a refractive purpose. “After cataract surgery, patients increasingly want to be able to do without glasses, whether they have presbyopia or other previous refractive errors, such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. Therefore, we must be very demanding as to the visual quality we provide with surgery”, concludes Dr Orbegozo, and EQ Workplace is a great help in this objective.
