Miranza collaborates with Abre sus Ojos to offer eye care to people with functional disabilities and at risk of social exclusion
Miranza and the association Abre sus Ojos have jointly provided eye check-ups for over 600 people from Mental Disability and Illness Care Centres, Charity and Social Intervention Associations, and Child Protection Associations in Euskadi. The check-ups took place at Miranza Clínica Begoña (Bilbao), over two days, 27th and 28th October.
In total, over 80 professionals (optometrists, ophthalmologists, chemists and volunteers) from throughout Spain went to the clinic in Bilbao to provide the check-ups, which included eyesight tests, visual and auditive health tests, and ocular hygiene.
“Ven y verás”
The initiative is part of the “Ven y Verás” (Come and See) project provided every year by “Abre sus Ojos”, a non-profit organisation that strives to prevent and detect eyesight problems in a vulnerable collective.
According to Dra. Itxaso Herrera, a specialist at Miranza Clínica Begoña and member of Abre sus Ojos, “the goal of this charity activity is to improve eye healthcare habits and detect any visual impairments”. Along these lines, the ophthalmologist explains that “there are many ocular diseases without any clear symptoms at first. We can detect them in time and “give them a name” in this type of controls, so that they can be treated properly”.

Ramón Berra, CEO of Miranza, explains that “we are excited to do our bit in these initiatives. Furthermore, it is part of our DNA, as the commitment of Miranza extends to the more vulnerable collectives at greater visual risk and with less access to quality eye care”.
The inaugural event of the days was attended by Juan Ibarretxe, Councillor of Social Affairs at Bilbao City Council; Valeria García-Landart, Director-General of FEVAS Euskadi; Ernesto Marco and Antonio García, the top officials of Abre Sus Ojos; Dr. Íñigo Corcóstegui, medical director of Miranza Clínica Begoña; and Dr Itxaso Herrera.
