IMO Grupo Miranza professional Dr García-Arumí restores eyesight of “abandoned” patient with haemorrhaging and retinal detachment caused by impacts of air-gun projectiles and failed surgical procedure

Retinal detachment due to ocular trauma is particularly complex and requires highly specialised treatment. This is reflected by the experience of Manuel Ángel Pageo, who suffered an accident that nearly blinded him for life. Several parts of his body and both his eyes were damaged by the impacts of air-gun projectiles. He immediately went to hospital for emergency care, where he was treated by several specialists who were unable to resolve his visual impairment.

“I could barely see, but they said they couldn’t operate because of all the blood inside my eye, and I was told to wait. After 15 days, they finally operated on me. A week later, in the post-operative check-up, they found that my eyes were in urgent need of surgery. At that point, I decided to get a second opinion, and they recommended that I go to Barcelona, to IMO Grupo Miranza”, Manuel Ángel recounts.

From that moment onwards, his case changed completely. He entrusted his care to Dr José García-Arumí, who explained to him the complexity of the trauma, as he was suffering not only severe intraocular haemorrhaging but also retinal detachment in both eyes. The patient required immediate surgery and, in particular, a highly precise and expert surgeon, due to the damage to the macula or central area of the retina, which is the part of the eye that provides detailed vision.

Expert surgery for retinal detachment caused by ocular trauma

Although the prognosis was not promising, Manuel Ángel put himself in the hands of the specialist of IMO Grupo Miranza to regain part of his lost eyesight. Fortunately, the outcome surpassed his own expectations: “The following day, I could see. I couldn’t believe it”, he exclaims. The joy he experienced was an important first step in his improvement, although his recovery did not end there. After undergoing further surgery, Manuel Ángel now has approximately 30% of his visual acuity. With the recovery, the degree of independence in his everyday life contrasts greatly with the blindness he suffered before seeking treatment from IMO Grupo Miranza. For example, he says that he was recently able to repair a lock. As a result of his experience, he now places even greater importance on vision care. “Eyesight isn’t something to be played with; you have to fight”, he concludes. We at Miranza share his utmost respect for eyes and specialised care, proudly providing expert solutions even in the most complex cases.
