Thermal pulsation: LipiFlow
What is thermal pulsation or LipiFlow?
Thermal pulsation with LipiFlow technology is a procedure based on the application of heat and local massage on the eyelids to improve drainage of the Meibomian glands, which are located under the root of the eyelashes and are responsible for secreting lipids and proteins to improve the lubricating function of the tear and prevent it from evaporating too easily. Thus, we relieve symptoms such as burning and stinging in the eyes, dryness, irritation and redness of the eye, eyelid swelling, photophobia and even pain or blurred vision.
We offer this innovative treatment, which is very convenient and takes 12 to 15 minutes, in the specialist offices of the Miranza clinics’ Dry Eye Area. To do so, we will apply some anaesthetic drops to the eye surface to avoid any discomfort – although it is not painful – and we will place a device that covers the eyelids on the inside and outside, while protecting the cornea during the session. This head heats up to 42.5 degrees, which is the melting point of the lipids contained in the Meibomian glands. At the same time, the equipment performs a gentle eyelid massage to allow drainage of the blocked glands and make them work normally again.
Eye diseases treated by thermal pulsation
The malfunction of the Meibomian glands is linked to many cases of blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid) and dry eye. It is particularly common in the elderly and at times in life when hormonal changes occur, such as adolescence or menopause. Also if you are a contact lens user and wear them for too many hours or if you suffer from certain skin diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis or rosacea.
Recovery
The thermal pulsation treatment with LipiFlow does not require any specific recovery measures and will allow you to get back to your daily activities immediately and without discomfort.
All you have to do is follow a series of eyelid hygiene guidelines, which our specialists will explain in detail, to prolong the good treatment results. In any case, it is generally necessary to repeat the treatment after a period ranging between 9 and 12 months, depending on each case, to preserve the good condition of the Meibomian glands.
